The BioEx Ethanol is a company located in Ponta Grossa, Parana state,
Brazil, dedicated to research, development and production of food and
energy originated from the sweet potato biomass, in four industrial
plants (two in Parana - Jesuitas and Ponta Grossa - and two in Tocantins - Babaculandia and Porto Nacional). The Cescage's efforts involving the development of high performance sweet potato cultivars, capable to yield 50 plus tons per hectare with a starch content up to 30%, of more efficient industrial columns, allowed the production of fuel grade and Korea grade ethanol and the utilization of all whole stillage (remaining solids from
distillation with 42% protein content) to animal feeding.
Innovative technologies were developed for the multiplication of the
reproductive stems, minimum tillage planting and other techniques which
resulted on low cost of production of the sweet potato crop, making it
more competitive than other energy crops such as cassava.
The industrial plants were developed to produce not only ethanol but
also high value co-products from the high protein content whole
stillage.
The Cescage College of Food Science is continuously devoted to the
research and development of new products to human nutrition from the
remaining solids from distillation, such as flour to bakery, pasta,
cakes, etc. Beverages, glue, biodegradable plastics, etc, are some
other potential co-products from the system.
The sweet potato-to-ethanol system has no significant impact on the
environmental impact since there are no unusable residues left from the
industrial process.
